Our Story: From 1825 to Today

Founded in 1825, Mount Hermon Church has been a spiritual anchor in the Altavista community for nearly two centuries.

What began as a small gathering in a log meetinghouse has grown into a faithful congregation committed to Christ and community. Early members like John Lee Jr. and Colonel Reid Arnold helped establish a legacy of hospitality, strong lay leadership, and gospel-centered living that has shaped generations.

In the 1800s and 1900s, Mount Hermon served as more than a church—it was a gathering place, a community hub, and a place where neighbors became family. The grounds hosted revival meetings, school gatherings, and social events that drew people from across the region. Through war, hardship, and change, the church remained a place of stability and hope.

Over the years, the building has changed, but the foundation has not. From oil lamps to modern updates, Mount Hermon has preserved its humble roots while adapting to meet the needs of its people.

In 2023, our church made the decision to step into a new season—disaffiliating from our previous denomination and becoming Mount Hermon Church once again. This marked more than a name change; it was a renewed commitment to stand on the authority of Scripture, reach the next generation, and live out our calling with boldness and compassion.

Nearly 200 years later, we are still here. Still faithful. Still growing.

The same Spirit that sparked our beginning is leading us forward—and we'd love for you to be part of what God is doing next.
